CALENDAR EVENTS   Bike, Walk & Roll to School Day

Wednesday, May 8th is the annual Bike, Walk & Roll to School Day. We are encouraging all our Lancers, who are able, to bike, walk and roll to school. There are many benefits to active transport such as developing healthier habits, contributing to a cleaner environment, promoting pedestrian safety, and building a stronger sense of community. If you would like to learn more, please check out the Walk, Bike & Roll to School website: https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/learn-more/why-walkbike/.

We hope to see you out there!

AFTER SCHOOL CORNER Last day of after school activities and late buses is Thursday, May 30th. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Parent Permission to Retest, Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests

The Virginia Board of Education allows certain elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399. (A score of 400 is considered passing for SOL tests).

Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-8. If you believe that your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, please complete this permission form and submit it to the school. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student's course grade or academic record.

See the notification of testing letter at https://www.fcps.edu/node/42716 for more information about the SOL tests given in grades 3-8.

Let's Finish the School Year Strong!

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:

     • Check your child’s attendance record.
     • Help your student stay engaged at school.
     • Report future absences.
     • Understand the FCPS school calendar.

Learn more about attendance resources.

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.

Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh-grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth-grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

Lancers-

Last week we participated in our annual basketball game against Cooper Middle School. We played a double header with our girls team losing a close one, and our boys team pulling out the win. I was proud of our students both on the court and in the stands throughout the event. Both schools showed good sportsmanship. It was great to see our students model the Lancer Code of being respectful, responsible, and safe.

I would like to thank all of our students that are participating in the afterschool program for being involved with their school. It is so exciting to see our students pursuing their various passions! I believe these opportunities are a key part of a holistic middle school experience.

Here is to a great week together! As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

CALENDAR EVENTS Passover and Half-O Days

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids.

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete school year calendar.

Theravada New Year (O Day)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

PARENT INFORMATION Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.
Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.

Amidst the challenges and sacrifices inherent with the military lifestyle, children of service members show their unwavering support for their parents and guardians as they stand as pillars of resilience, adapting to change, and embracing diversity. Their commitment to supporting their service member(s) deserves not just recognition, but celebration. One of the most visible displays of support for military-connected youth occurs on Purple Up! CALENDAR EVENTS National Library Week

April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs. We are fortunate and privileged to have two awesome librarians, Ms. Saladino & Ms.Hoyle! Thank you for all that you do for our school community!

Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation for our awesome librarians, Ms. Saladino & Ms. Hoyle!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Longfellow MS Meditation & Silent Reflection Space

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents and/or caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Please use this Google Form to give permission for their child to utilize the meditation and silent reflection space during instructional times.

View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

U.S. National Model STEM Education Program Opportunity

Announcing the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) 21st Flight Opportunity - SSEP Mission 19 to the International Space Station, Starting September 2024

2024-25 Academic Year Opportunity for a School Community to Engage 100+ Grade 5-12 Students in Real Microgravity Experiment Design and Proposal Writing, with One Experiment In Each Community Selected for Operation By Astronauts on the International Space Station

STEM Project-Based Learning Through Immersion in an Authentic Research Experience on the High Frontier

TIME CRITICAL: interested school districts are directed to inquire about the program as soon as possible, and no later than April 15, 2024

MILESTONE DATES:
Experiment Design and Proposal Writing Phase: September 3 - November 5, 2024 (9 weeks)

Selection of Your Community's Flight Experiment: December 20, 2024

SpaceX Launch of Your Experiment to the International Space Station: Late Spring 2025

Ferry Flight Return to Earth: Launch + 4 to 6 weeks

SSEP National Conference, likely at Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC: early July 2025

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education announces Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) Mission 19 to the International Space Station. This opportunity gives students across your community the ability to design and propose microgravity experiments to fly in low-Earth orbit on the International Space Station (ISS). Experiments are designed to real world engineering and technology constraints imposed by the flight certified mini-lab that must be used, and the nature of flight operations to and from Low Earth Orbit. One experiment in each community will be selected to fly to ISS on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launching from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in FL. Your experiment will launch from historic pad 39A, the same pad from which all Apollo missions to the Moon launched, and 82 Space Shuttle missions. Astronauts aboard ISS will operate the experiment for 4-6 weeks before it is returned to Earth and to your community's student flight team for harvesting and analysis. SSEP is not a simulation. We are truly inviting your community to be part of America's Space Program.

Over the history of human spaceflight, a mission patch has been associated with every NASA mission. A community can engage hundreds of students in mission patch art and design competitions, with two patches selected to fly with the flight experiment. SSEP is therefore an authentic STEAM initiative. We invite communities to use their mission patch competition to also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon missions, and humans returning to the Moon in likely 2025 with NASA's Artemis Program.

An important consideration - the expectation is that a team of educators in a participating community will engage at least 100 grade 5-12 students (more typically 300+) over 9 weeks of experiment design and proposal writing spanning September 3 through November 5, 2024. Students across the community form teams of 3-5 students, each team designing a microgravity experiment in a science discipline of their choice. Each team writes a formal proposal to make the case for why their experiment should be selected for flight to ISS. Your students will be engaged in a very real research proposal competition, focusing on technical writing, just like professional scientists and engineers. The expectation is that you will secure at least 20-30 flight experiment proposals across your community. A national review board meeting in Washington, DC, will select the flight experiment for your community, and do the same for each of the other Mission 19 participating communities.

The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) provides a fully authentic research competition as a STEM Project Based Learning experience. Launch of the Mission 19 flight experiments is currently projected for Spring 2025. Mission 19 occurs across the 2024-25 academic year.

For program details, and how to explore this opportunity for your community, carefully read the SSEP Home Page, which provides a comprehensive summary of the program:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day

The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their student’s counselor and administrator regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Lancers:
This week at Longfellow Middle School has been buzzing with excitement and growth!

The school's first dance of the year, "Neon Nights", was a resounding success! The energy and joy in the room were truly contagious, and it was wonderful to see our students celebrating together. A huge thank you goes to everyone that made the dance a success, and of course, our amazing students for making it such a memorable night.

The Longfellow community is excited to share all the good work that Mr. Kellams has done in leading a new learning cohort for staff focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative reflects the school's commitment to continuous learning and professional development for educators. Thank you to Mr. Kellams' dedication to fostering this valuable opportunity for his colleagues.

This Friday, many of our talented theatre and chorus students will head to Broadway. This opportunity will allow them to experience professional productions and immerse themselves in the world of live performance. We wish them a safe and enriching journey!
As always, please reach out directly with any questions or concerns.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Rising 8th Grade Academic Advising

The Academic Advising season for the 2024-25 school year is in full swing! Counselors are meeting with students to conduct individual meetings with each rising 8th grade student. As we move through the registration process, please have conversations with your student(s) about the courses that they will be requesting to take for the 2024-25 school year. Course selections are due in StudentVue March 8, 2024.

Advising Website - Our website is the main hub of information. There you will find our course catalog, videos/presentations about each of our core departments and electives.

SEL Screener

The SEL Screener is administered to students twice a year (fall and spring) for students to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The Spring SEL Screener will be administered on March 6th for 7th & 8th graders during Learning Seminar 4. The fall screening date was October 18th.

SEL Opt-Out Info Complete the opt-out form (Must be logged into fcps student account to access) in SIS ParentVUE or return the form back to Student Services by February 28th.

Kiss and Ride Procedure

Safety is of utmost importance during arrival and dismissal times. We would like to remind families to remain aware and considerate during these periods. If you opt to drop off your child in the morning, drop-off is available as early as 6:55 am. The waiting time in the Kiss and Ride line is significantly shorter earlier in the morning compared to closer to 7:30 am.

Furthermore, we have noticed an increase in families dropping off their children while being outside our property. Specifically, we have received numerous complaints from residents on Hopewood Drive. Not adhering to our kiss and ride procedure can pose risks as children in these situations often crossroads without the presence of crossing guards or designated crosswalks. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have had incidents where students were hit by vehicles while running across Westmoreland because they were dropped off on the opposite side of the street. Please remember to exercise patience and only drop off your child in the designated zone near door #4, where our staff members are available to assist you and ensure your child's safe exit from the vehicle.

Dear Lancers:

As we approach the end of February, Longfellow continues to buzz with activity! This week, we celebrated the power of inquiry, danced under the glow of neon lights, and learned a life-saving skill - all while fostering a supportive and engaging environment for our future leaders.

Highlighting WICOR: This month, we've been delving into the world of WICOR - Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. This week, several teachers chose to serve as model hubs of "Inquiry," showcasing how engaging questions and curiosity can lead to deeper understanding and critical thinking.

Saving Lives with Gwyneth's Gift: Our Health and Physical Education department is proud to partner with Gwyneth's Gift, teaching all students the crucial skill of hands-only CPR. This important initiative, named after a young girl who tragically lost her life, empowers our students to become potential lifesavers. We are grateful to our dedicated teachers for organizing this impactful and life-saving program.

Grooving under the Neon Lights: Get ready for the dance floor, Lancers! Our first dance of the year, themed "Neon Nights," is happening this Friday, February 23rd. Tickets are on sale through MySchoolBucks and the last day to buy a ticket is Wednesday Feb 21st.

As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership in making Longfellow Middle School a vibrant and nurturing learning environment. We look forward to another exciting week!

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),
Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders. To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Dear Lancers:

We have a lot going on in February at Longfellow! Our 8th graders channeled their inner entrepreneurs in the "Shark Tank Project." in our civics classes. Inspired by the hit TV show, our students transformed into budding entrepreneurs, crafting unique business ideas, developing persuasive pitches, and facing the "Sharks" (Teachers and classmates) in a friendly competition. It was so exciting to see their creativity and business acumen shine while learning about economic forces!

Additionally, we're kicking off WICOR “spirit month”! WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) forms the foundation of our AVID program and fosters essential skills for success. Each week, we'll highlight a different WICOR trait in our classrooms, creating model learning environments. Teachers have the opportunity to observe other classrooms to see these strategies in action. This will help teachers to exchange ideas and inspire each other.

A friendly reminder about the upcoming Presidents' Day holiday on February 19th, when school will be closed. Additionally, don't forget to keep an eye out for upcoming performances by our talented band, chorus, and orchestra programs. Check the school calendar below for dates and times!
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Not adhering to our kiss and ride procedure can pose risks as children in these situations often cross roads without the presence of crossing guards or designated crosswalks.

Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Dear Lancers-

Today marks the beginning of the 3rd quarter. It is a natural break in our schedule where I would recommend sitting down with your child and reviewing their schedule and progress thus far in the school year. You can also review work habits and organizational strategies they've tried so far. What has been going well? What could use some more attention? It is a good time to help them set goals for the second half of the year. As always, we are here to help! You can reach out to your child’s counselor or teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
