All Rising LMS 7th and 8th Graders:

By the time school begins in the fall, all rising 7^th and 8^th grade students are encouraged to read at least one book.

Rising 9^th Graders

Rising 9^th graders going to McLean High School are encouraged to read one YA dystopian novel.  Log into your @fcpsschools.net account to access this presentation of dystopian novels recommended by English teachers at McLean High School.  Not going to McLean HS?  Check your high school’s website about additional summer reading recommendations.

Ravenous Readers’ Challenge

Are you an avid reader? Do you simply devour books? LMS challenges all rising 7th and 8th grade students to channel their inner bookworms this summer! Read 10 books this summer, and submit the Ravenous Readers’ Challenge form between August 15th and the first week in September.  All participants can earn a prize, and five lucky LMS Ravenous Readers will be selected randomly to win gift cards to One More Page Books in Falls Church.

Read for Fun During the Summer Reading Adventure! 

Ask a family member to sign you up online using Beanstack. Use an existing Beanstack account or create one if you've never logged in before. Use Beanstack to:

1. Earn badges for every 100 minutes you read
2. Unlock badges by completing fun activities all summer long
3. Enter yourself into prize drawings when you reach milestones

You'll have several chances to earn prizes when you read and complete activities.

Don't want to use Beanstack to log your reading? Download a paper reading log instead!  Paper reading logs will be available  online and at your local library branch.

Download eBooks and eAudiobooks using the MackinVia app on phones or tablets, or download them directly into your browser on your computer.  Links to MackinVia and other digital book resources can be found on our Online Catalog.

Tips From Fairfax County Public Library

Using Your Public Library 

Students may use their FCPS student IDs to checkout books in person from Fairfax County Public Library branches.  For more information about this program, check the Library Equity Access Pass (LEAP) page.

In addition to accessing ebooks and audiobooks through MackinVia, students can also use Fairfax County Public Library to download ebooks and audiobooks, but only Fairfax County Public Library cards, not student IDs, can be used to access digital books. To obtain a temporary library card, students and parents can apply online. In order to acquire a more permanent card, you will have to pay a quick visit to your local library branch.

Libby eBooks and eAudiobooks

Students with a public library card, whether temporary or permanent, can borrow an endless supply eBooks and eAudiobooks through Libby. Libby is a book lover's dream! There are tons of wonderful Middle Grade and Young Adult books and no late fees! When your loan period is up for a book, the book simply disappears from your account. Ebooks may be downloaded via the Libby app onto eReaders, smart phones, and tablets. Students who don't possess one of these devices can read eBooks on a computer using Libby's website. Libby also offers innumerable audiobooks that can be played on any device that plays mp3s.
